Drive Units for the Pulp and Paper Industry

DBS Manufacturing drive units are designed to work effectively in a wide variety of processes that are common in the pulp and paper industry. DBS drive units produce consistent rotation speeds while minimizing energy consumption. Our durable, reliable drives are built to reduce required maintenance tasks, so you save time and money over the life of the product.

Our standard products work on a wide variety of equipment and in many different processes. If your equipment requires modifications, our engineering team can adjust our drives to give you an optimal component at an affordable price. Drive units power a wide variety of processes in the pulp and paper industry. Applications include clarification and thickening, effluent clarifiers, kraft processes, lagoon aeration, and lime mud agitators.

Our drive units are used throughout the paper creation process, including in green liquor and white liquor states that occur during the kraft pulping process (also known as kraft process or sulfate process).

Torque Gauge

The DBS torque gauge comes standard on every drive unit. Our large-diameter, stainless steel gauge accurately shows the drive’s torque in foot-pounds or Newton-meters, so you get the exact information you need to determine unit performance. While many other manufacturers use color-coded systems (red, yellow, green) or percentages, our gauge displays the specific torque. Add an optional 4-20 mA torque transducer for remote torque monitoring and process control is available.

Bridge-Mounted Aerator

Used in lagoon aeration

Bridge-Mounted Aerator | DBS Manufacturing

The durable DBS NSA Bridge-Mounted Aerator is cost competitive with high-speed aerators while offering the efficiency and power savings of low-speed aerators. Power savings can be significant, around 20% to 30% or more. The planetary gearbox is mounted directly in the aerator rotor. A high-efficiency, backwards-curved radial blade rotor increases oxygen transfer efficiency.

Bridge-Mounted Drive

Used in clarification and thickening, kraft processes, and lagoon aeration

Bridge Mounted Drive | DBS Manufacturing

The DBS Bridge-Mounted Drive is a low-speed, high-torque, totally enclosed gear drive with positive overload protection. The drive unit has a central output shaft to drive the rakes, and is supported by a bridge completely spanning the tank. It is typically used on tank sizes from 10 to 100 ft (3 to 30 m) in diameter.

Bridge-Mounted Dual Drive

Used in flocculation and solids contact clarifiers

Bridge Mounted Dual Drive | DBS Manufacturing

The DBS Bridge-Mounded Dual Drive has two concentric output drive drums: the rake drive and the turbine drive. The rake drive section has an external rotating drive drum with attachment points for the rake cage. The gear drive is low-speed, high-torque, and totally enclosed. It is also designed with positive overload protection. The turbine drive section is a heavy-duty, totally enclosed gear drive that runs at a higher speed.

Floating Aerator

Used in lagoon aeration

Floating Aerator | DBS Manufacturing

The DBS NSA Floating Aerator is a low-speed aerator. This durable aerator combines the efficiency and power savings of low-speed aerators with the affordability of high-speed aerators. Power savings can be significant, in the range of 20% or more.

A planetary gearbox drives the aerator rotor. This mass-produced gearbox provides the DBS NSA Floating Aerator with its impressive power/cost ratio. Choose from a traditional high-efficiency backward-curved radial blade rotor or a DBS dynamic draft tube rotor.

Hyperbolic Mixer

Used in anaerobic flocculation

Hyperbolic Mixer | DBS Manufacturing

The DBS Hyperbolic Mixer rotor is specifically designed to operate at the bottom of a mixing basin where the rotor will efficiently draw water down and discharge it in a horizontal direction. This induced flow will circulate the water in the tank from bottom to top to maintain all solids in suspension. DBS Hyperbolic Mixers are available in configurations from 1 HP (0.75 kW) to 30 HP (22 kW). We also build custom Hyperbolic Mixers for industrial applications.

Agitators

Used in kraft processes and lime mud agitators

M Series Drive Unit | DBS Manufacturing

DBS Manufacturing M-Series Drive Units are powered by high-efficiency, severe-duty, inverter duty-rated electric motors up to 100 HP. Drive units also come with high-efficiency, severe-duty gear reducers with a high service factor for reliable, long life.

To protect your equipment in harsh environments, we offer a wide variety of corrosion prevention methods, including galvanizing, stainless steel, brass, and a variety of coatings.

Mixers and Flocculators

Used in flocculation, suspension, homogenization, and subsurface aeration

Mixers and Flocculators | DBS Manufacturing

DBS Manufacturing provides custom solutions for many unique flocculator and mixer applications for a variety of industries. Flocculators, agitators, and mixers are made for OEM applications and to retrofit existing equipment. They are easy to install and require minimal maintenance.

All DBS Manufacturing mixers and flocculators are powered by high-efficiency, severe-duty, inverter duty-rated electric motors up to 100 HP. They also come with high-efficiency, severe-duty gear reducers with a high service factor for reliable, long life.

Pier-Mounted Drive

Used in clarification and thickening, and effluent clarifiers

pier mounted drive | DBS Manufacturing

Most frequently used as a clarifier drive, the DBS Pier-Mounted Drive is a low-speed, high-torque, totally enclosed gear drive with positive output torque overload protection. The drive unit has an external rotating drive drum with attachment points for the rake cage. It is supported by a column in the center of the tank, and tank sizes typically range from 40 ft to 300 ft (12 m to 100 m) in diameter.

Pier-Mounted Dual Drive

Used in clarification and thickening, and effluent clarifiers

It is supported by a column in the center of the tank, and tank sizes typically range from 40 ft to 300 ft (12 m to 100 m) in diameter.

Rake-Lifting Mechanism

Used in kraft processes

Rake Lifting Mechanism | DBS Manufacturing

Almost all DBS Drive Units can be provided with a lifting mechanism that can raise and lower the rakes up to 36 inches (900 mm). Rake lifts operate by raising the output shaft into the drive unit on S-series models and raising the entire drive unit on D-Series models. The lift mechanism is fully contained within the drive unit. In most cases, the installation of a DBS lift-equipped drive unit is no more complicated than that of a normal non-lifting clarifier drive.
